PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Chaga (Inonotus obliquus) is a fungal species that grows on birch hosts in cold climates, producing a sterile conk rather than a conventional mushroom. It has long been used in traditional practice for its dense concentration of polysaccharides, β-glucans and melanin-like pigments, and it is these fractions that the extract is built around. Both the sclerotium and the fruiting body can be used as raw material; the raw-material basis should be stated on the specification, because the two give different compositional profiles.
Wellgreen's chaga extract is produced by water extraction at controlled temperatures, which concentrates the water-soluble polysaccharide fraction while retaining the pigment and phenolic content. It is supplied as 10:1 and 20:1 extracts, standardised on polysaccharide content.

Chaga's chemistry is a composite rather than a single marker, and the specification should be read accordingly:
- Polysaccharides and β-glucans - the water-soluble fraction, and the basis on which the extract is standardised.
- Betulinic acid derivatives - carried over from the birch host and measured as a supporting marker.
- Melanin and phenolic compounds - the dark pigment fraction that gives the extract its colour.
- Ergosterol (provitamin D2) - a sterol characteristic of fungal material.
- Trace minerals - taken up from the host tree.
