Cordyceps sinensis extract powder is produced from Ophiocordyceps sinensis (syn. Cordyceps sinensis), an entomopathogenic fungus that parasitises ghost moth larvae on the high-altitude grasslands of the Tibetan plateau. Wellgreen supplies the extract as a standardised polysaccharide grade for food, supplement and cosmetic manufacturing.
Raw material origin
Wild C. sinensis is scarce and expensive, so commercial material comes from one of three routes: wild-collected stroma, cultivated stroma grown on a substrate, or liquid-fermented mycelium. These are not equivalent products and the production route should be stated on the specification. The species occurs across alpine regions of Qinghai, Tibet, Sichuan, Yunnan, Gansu and Guizhou; sourcing region and cultivation method are both relevant to batch-to-batch consistency.
Composition
The characterising constituents are a polysaccharide fraction, nucleosides - of which cordycepin (3'-deoxyadenosine) is the usual marker - and a range of minor components including mannitol, sterols, amino acids and B-group vitamins. Because the nucleoside accumulates far more readily in Cordyceps militaris than in C. sinensis, a cordycepin figure quoted without a named species and production route is not a useful basis for comparison. On carbohydrate-standardised grades the polysaccharide content is the specification item; on nucleoside-standardised grades it is the cordycepin content.
