PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Sea buckthorn berry oil is produced from the whole fruit of Hippophae rhamnoides L. by supercritical CO2 extraction. The process takes the oil fraction without a solvent residue step and retains the fruit's characteristic aroma. The oil is high in unsaturated fatty acids - oleic and linoleic acid together account for up to 85% of the fatty acid profile - and also carries vitamin A and vitamin E along with the fruit's flavonoid content.

SPECIFYING AN OIL
Oil specifications are written differently from powder specifications. The figures that decide an order are the fatty acid profile, the flavone content, the peroxide value, the acid value and the colour - peroxide and acid value being the two that determine how the oil behaves over shelf life. Provenance of the fruit, and whether the oil is expressed from whole fruit or from seed, both change the profile and should be stated. Wellgreen supplies fruit-derived oil extracted with supercritical CO2; a seed-derived grade is covered on a separate page.
INTERNAL USE AND APPLICATION
Sea buckthorn berry oil is used as a formulation ingredient in:
- Dietary supplements, soft capsules and oily blends
- Functional food and beverage products where an oil phase is present
- Personal care, including creams, lotions and facial oils
- Massage and body care preparations
The oil is generally added at the oil phase of an emulsion or blended into an oil-based fill. Where it is used in a personal care formula, the naturally high unsaturated fatty acid content and the tocopherols it carries make it useful as both an emollient and an oil phase with intrinsic oxidative stability. Oxidative stability should be confirmed against the intended shelf life, since a high-unsaturation oil is more sensitive to heat and light than a saturated carrier.

Manufacturing is carried out under ISO9001, ISO22000, FSSC22000, HACCP, cGMP and FAMI-QS management systems, and the product range is certified for HALAL, KOSHER, NOP and EOS (organic) where applicable.
