PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Yucca is a genus of perennial shrubs and trees in the family Asparagaceae, subfamily Agavoideae. Its 40–50 species are characterised by rosettes of tough, sword-shaped evergreen leaves and large terminal panicles of white flowers, and are native to the hot, arid regions of North America, Central America, South America and the Caribbean.
Yucca extract is produced from the stems and leaves and standardised on its saponin content - principally the steroidal saponins sarsasapogenin and smilagenin glycosides. In feed use, the recognised mode of action is enzymatic: the saponin fraction inhibits urease activity, slowing the hydrolysis of urea to ammonia. That is why the ingredient is used in rations where nitrogen is managed carefully, and why it is commonly specified alongside litter and slurry management rather than regarded as a stand-alone input.

FUNCTION IN THE RATION
Yucca extract is added to compound feed and premixes where the objective is nitrogen and odour management: reducing ammonia and other gas concentrations in the barn or house environment, and moderating the rate at which urea is converted to ammonia in the rumen. It is normally added at the premix stage rather than to finished feed, so that it is distributed evenly through the batch. Saponin-containing powders are fine and light, and standard dust-control practice applies during weighing and blending.
