Recently, in a new study published in the "Journal of Ethnopharmacology", researchers from the Agricultural Research Institute of Shinshu University in Japan discovered that Saxifraga can be used as a means to solve conventional infectious dermatitis.
Antibiotics against bacteria and steroids that inhibit inflammation are commonly used to control dermatitis, but their therapeutic effects are not ideal due to the emergence of resistant bacteria and the side effects of long-term use. Saxifraga provides a means to locally control inflammation on the body by stimulating a limited immune response.
Saxifraga is described as "Yukinoshita" in Japanese. It is a highly safe plant material with a mature record of use. It has been used as food and cosmetics for centuries, including medicine. Although its anti-inflammatory effects are well known, the detailed mechanism of action has not yet been elucidated.
In this study, the researchers identified a new physiological function of Saxifraga extract, which can inhibit the expression of Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2) and TLR2-mediated inflammation in human skin keratinocytes. This study provides important insights into the anti-inflammatory effects of saxifrage in human skin.
