Active ingredients of Houttuynia cordata
Houttuynia cordata is a perennial plant. This herb has very promising antiviral properties, especially in vitro against clinically important enveloped viruses, such as herpes simplex virus, influenza virus and human immunodeficiency virus. Interestingly, the steam distillate of Houttuynia cordata can significantly inactivate enveloped viruses, but not non-enveloped viruses.
At present, various types of chemical components have been separated from Houttuynia cordata, such as aristolochia lactam, 5,4-dioxaporphyrin, oxaporphyrin, amide, indole, ionone, and flavonoids , Benzophenone, steroids and different volatile oils. Houttuylin A and Houttuynia A were also isolated from this plant.
The medicinal value of Houttuynia cordata
Oral water extract of Houttuynia cordata can inhibit the systemic allergic reaction in mouse model, which inhibits the local allergic reaction activated by rat anti-dinitrophenyl immunoglobulin E antibody, that is, passive skin allergic reaction. It also reduces mast cell degranulation induced by sensitizing compounds and colchicine-induced deformation of rat peritoneal mast cells.

In terms of anti-virus, Houttuynia cordata showed a significant inhibitory effect on SARS coronavirus 3C-like protease. One of the findings is that the aqueous extract of Houttuynia cordata has antiviral activity against dengue virus serotype 2. Before and after incubation of Houttuynia cordata with HepG2 cells, it was found that the intracellular dengue virus was significantly reduced, and its RNA production was related to dengue fever protein. The decline in expression is related.
Houttuynia cordata has been well used in Chinese medicine for fever, malnutrition, removal of toxins from the body, antibacterial and treatment of lung diseases. In addition, the plant is widely used as a vegetable in India and northeastern China, and has been identified as one of the most potential medicinal and edible plant genetic resources by the Ministry of Health of China.
