Senna leaf, the synonym Junna leaf, senna leaf and bamboo leaf originate from the leaves of the leguminous plant Senna Narrowa or Senna acuminata. It is a shrub that grows in India, Pakistan, southern China and many other places. The shrub can grow to about two feet tall, with green stems, pods and yellow spade-shaped leaves. Its alternate leaves are evergreen, with four to five pairs of lanceolate or obovate gray-green fragile lobules.
Senna leaf contains sennoside C, namely rhein-aloe emodin-anthrone-8,8'-diglucoside. Pods contain not only sennoside A and B, but also rhein and chrysophanol glucoside, and trace aloe emodin or emodin glucoside.
The laxative effect of sennoside and its active metabolite anthrone rheinate are thought to inhibit the absorption of water and electrolyte in the large intestine, thereby increasing the volume and pressure of intestinal contents. It will stimulate the progressive contraction of the colon. In addition, the stimulating effect on the secretion of active chlorides increases the contents of enteral water and electrolyte. These changes in the transport of active electrolytes depend on calcium on the plasma surface. The mild diarrhea effect of sennoside is partly mediated by stimulation of colon fluid and electrolyte secretion, which is regulated by stimulation of endogenous prostaglandin formation. Sennoside can be prepared into enema or suppository or mixed with stool softener or lump fiber laxative to form a combined laxative.
