Luo Han Guo(Momordica grosvenori)Extract

Oct 29, 2020

The Momordica grosvenori extract powder has been used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine.Which is known as stevia glycosides, Luo Han Guo or Buddha fruit is a small, round fruit grown in Southeast China.

Momordica grosvenori  contains natural sugars, mainly fructose and glucose. However, unlike in most fruits, the natural sugars in monk fruit aren’t responsible for its sweetness. Instead, it gets its intense sweetness from unique antioxidants called mogrosides.

Firstly, monk fruit extract (momordica glycosides) is used in traditional Chinese medicine for colds, coughs, sore throats, gastrointestinal upset etc.

Monk fruit extract (Fructus momordicae glucoside) is easily soluble in water without precipitation. The extract contains 80% or more fructus momordicae glucoside, which is 300 times sweeter than sugar, and is low in calories. It is an ideal additive for diabetics.

Secondly, monk fruit contains a lot of amino acids, fructose, vitamins and minerals. It is also used as a spice and nutritional supplement in cooking. As a universal natural sweetener, it is an ideal substitute for artificial sweeteners such as aspartame. It can be used in beverages, baked foods, nutritious foods, low-calorie foods, or other foods that require low carbohydrate sweeteners or low calories. The process of cooking or baking does not affect its flavor or sweetness.

Thirdly, pharmacological effects of fructus momordicae glucoside:

 (1) Expectorant effects: Fructus Momordicae glucoside (total glucoside & GT;80 %) 0.2g/ kg,0.4g/kg and 0.8g/kg were given intragastric administration, and 0.4g/kg and 0.8g/kg dosage significantly increased the amount of tracheal secretions in rats, which showed significant expectorant effect.

(2) Effects of clearing lung and relieving cough: Fructus Momordicae glucoside (TOTAL glycoside & GT; The doses of 0.2g/ kg, 0.4g/ kg and 0.8g/ kg all significantly reduced the number of cough in mice induced by ammonia, but had no significant effect on the incubation period of cough.

(3) Effects of scavenging free radicals, antioxidation: Extract from fructus momordicae glycoside (98% of the total glycosides, fructus momordicae sweet glycosideⅤcontent 65.20%) have distinct scavenging effect on hydroxyl radicals and superoxide anion. With the increase of glycoside concentration, the scavenging effect is evidently increased.
