How to Distinguish Marigold Lutein and Calendula Flower Extract?

Marigold, calendula flower extract, Lutein, Carotenoid, Carotol are used as herbal medicine to protect eyesight, anti-oxidation, anti-tumor, inhibit the activity of active oxygen-derived free radicals, artery wall from thickening and arterial embolism. 1. Different plant sources

The calendula plants are perennial herb, which is short, with dense flowers, bright yellow or golden in color. The shape of the petals is tongue-like, narrow and flat, and there are not so many petals on a flower. Marigold is an annual herb. The color is usually orange-red or yellow. It has a fishy smell and its leaves are especially thick which is often used as the raw materials of lutein. The petals of marigold are clusters, compact and dense layer upon layer. Generally speaking marigold and calendula are similar in color but different in petal shape.

2. Different growth environment

The calendulas love a slightly acidic environment and grow very fast in sunny areas. Marigolds like sandy soil, preferably fertile with good drainage. The same as the calendula, marigolds like sunlight too.

3. Different in distribution scope

Originally planted in Western Europe, calendulas are now most commonly seen in Britain and Israel, the calendula related products produced there are of international reputation. Marigold is native in Mexico, but now, it is widely planted in southeast of China's.

4. Different in function 

Marigold, has a long flowering period and beautiful flowers, and is used both for viewing and plant medicine. The marigold lutein, carotenoid is commonly used for detoxification, reducing swelling, the treatment of different inflammation such as pharyngitis, bronchitis, mastitis. Calendula is used in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals for frostbite and skin ulcers. In terms of function, marigold and calendula can also be distinguished.
