In traditional Chinese medicine, cinnamon has been used for the treatment of diabetes mellitus for a long time, but it has been rarely reported whether it can verify the efficacy of Chinese medicine on type 2 diabetes in China. Researchers from Institute of nutrition and Xuhui Central Hospital conducted a randomized double-blind clinical trial. It was found that the fasting blood glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin levels of the patients were significantly lower than those of the control group after taking low-dose or high-dose cinnamon extract for 3 months. In addition, taking low-dose cinnamon extract can significantly reduce the serum triglyceride level of patients.
This experiment reveals that Cinnamomum cassia extract can be used as an effective adjunctive therapy for clinical intervention in patients with type 2 diabetes, and provides a successful example for promoting the modernization of Chinese medicine.
The cinnamon extract used in this clinical trial was further developed by Shanghai Yitian Biotechnology Co., Ltd. on the basis of the research and development work carried out by Dr. Qin Ying of Institute of nutrition. It has been approved by the State Food and Drug Administration
The research was supported by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the National Natural Science Foundation of China.
