The raw material is the plant Yucca schidigera, a slow-growing evergreen native to the arid region of northern Mexico and the southwestern United States. The finished extract is standardised on its saponin content.

Why It Is Used In Pet Applications
The saponins are surface-active, and that is the property pet producers use. In pet production, ammonia is one of the principal odour gases from urine and faeces, and the saponin fraction addresses it in two ways: it suppresses the urease activity that converts urea into ammonia, and it associates with ammonia at the air-water interface so that less of it volatilises. The result is a lower ammonia and odour load in the environment.
