Life renewal! Regulates fat metabolism and plants fed to pigs can prolong life by 41%

Mar 07, 2022

As a qualified "anti-aging master", how can not rapidly changing life extension technology at the fingertips?

Artemisia annua, also known as artemisia scoparia, is a kind of herb that can be used as both wild vegetable and medicine, and in some places, it is even fed to pigs. But a new scientific study has found that this unremarkable plant could actually prolong life.

Us researchers found that artemisia extract increased the lifespan of c. elegans by 41 percent without affecting its ability to reproduce by promoting fat storage and metabolic recovery. The findings were published Feb. 15 in The Journals of Gerontology: Series A, an international journal of Gerontology.

The study found that nematodes fed the extract had increased expression of δ 9 fatty acid desaturase, a protein that promotes the conversion of unhealthy saturated fatty acids into monounsaturated fatty acids. Although fat is still the same fat but changed a storage form, this "fat" not only does not affect health but also contributes to longevity.

Experimental data showed that nematodes that were given artemisia extract as adults had a significant lifespan extension of 37-41%. Even nematodes that started taking them in middle age lived nearly 20 percent longer. What's more, while many anti-aging interventions affect the organism's ability to reproduce, artemisia extract did not adversely affect the nematodes' ability to reproduce. Nematodes produced the same number of offspring as the control group and kept breeding longer.

The researchers found that the extract works by stimulating the nuclear translocation of the transcription factor Daf-16 /FOXO, which regulates fat metabolism. In daf-16 mutated nematodes, artemisia annua extract had no life-extending effect at all.

It is important to note that although Artemisia scoparia extract is by increasing the unsaturated fat way to extend the life of the worm if the feeding of artemisia scoparia extracts at the same time, continue to supplement in the worm's diet monounsaturated fatty acids, which not only have no double effect but too much of a good thing, may endanger the health of nematodes and longevity.
