Berberine and Silymarin Mixtures Help Heart Metabolic Health
Recently, a meta-analysis of five randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials (RCTs) conducted by researchers from the University of Bologna, the University of L'Aquila and the University of Palermo in Italy found that formulated products containing berberine and silymarin could improve blood lipid and fasting blood sugar levels. The report showed that subjects'blood sugar levels dropped significantly, with an average drop of 7.5 mg/dl. The results of the study have been published in the Journal Plant Therapy Research.

The effect of berberine on lipid reduction is well known. The meta-analysis of 27 clinical studies, involving 2569 participants, was clearly confirmed by the researchers. Compared with meta-analysis, the results showed that increased silymarin (berberine) could have a positive effect on lipid and sugar metabolism in humans, allowing the use of lower doses of berberine, thereby reducing the risk of gastrointestinal discomfort significantly associated with the dosage.
In fact, considering the tolerance of low dose (berberine) may also have important clinical significance, because hypercholesterolemia is an asymptomatic clinical compliance, adherence to prescription lipid-lowering drugs is relatively low, and the discontinuation rate is even higher when adverse events or drug reactions occur.
Italian scientists reviewed the literature systematically and found five eligible RCTs included in their meta-analysis. The data came from 497 people. The duration of the study ranged from 3 to 12 months, with berberine at doses of 500 or 1000 mg/day and silymarin at doses of 105 or 210 mg/day.
The results showed that the combined treatment could reduce total cholesterol by 25 mg/dl, triglyceride by 28 mg/dl, LDL cholesterol by 29 mg/dl and HDL cholesterol by 6 mg/dl. Existing studies have shown that berberine and silymarin can improve blood lipid and blood sugar levels, and this combination of nutrients may be used to promote cardiac metabolic health.
