Arbutin, is extracted from the leaves of bear fruit. It can inhibit the activity of tyrosinase in vivo and prevent the production of melanin, thus reducing the deposition of skin pigments, removing spots and freckles. It also has the functions of sterilization and anti-inflammation.
At present, the two most commonly used arbutin in cosmetics are alpha-arbutin and beta-arbutin. The price of alpha-arbutin is much higher than beta-arbutin. This is mainly because beta-arbutin is obtained by chemical synthesis, while alpha-arbutin can only be produced by enzymatic synthesis (microbial fermentation). In addition to the differences in technology, compared with beta-arbutin, alpha-arbutin has better water-solubility, heat-resistant, light-stable and has no cytotoxicity in a safe dose, and the effect of inhibiting melanin production is 10 times stronger than beta-arbutin. Therefore, alpha-arbutin is generally used in advanced whitening cosmetics.
